Agnes Auslund, age 97, resident of Glenwood Estates, passed away peacefully in the presence of her daughter, September 13, 2014. Agnes Pearl Jeanette (Peterson) Auslund was born in August 27, 1917 in Solem Township, Kensington, Minnesota to Martin and Carrie (Johnson) Peterson. She was baptized on October 28, 1917 and confirmed June 7, 1931 at Solem Church by Reverend Vaage. Agnes attended Hoffman High School and graduated as the valedictorian in 1935. The following year Agnes enrolled in Normal Training in Glenwood, Minnesota to prepare to become a teacher. Her first teaching job was at District 71 and later in District 63, both in Douglas County. She taught school for 15 years.
Agnes married Ivan Auslund on December 30, 1948 after dating him for nine years. Their wedding took place at the Victory Lutheran Church Parsonage in Minneapolis with Reverend Vaage officiating. Their daughter Ivalene was born on December 15, 1950. Agnes went back to work when the Hoffman Nursing Home was built in 1964 as their first employee. She continued to work there for 25 years until at age 72, when she retired as the Housekeeping Supervisor. She began each day in the early morning with a 2 1/2 mile walk that she routed through Hoffman, providing her with time for thought, reflection and invigoration before work.
Agnes was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was in contact with her first cousins and relatives in Norway. She traveled to Norway to visit them seven times with Ivan and the last time with her granddaughter Carrie. Her first language was Norwegian, and learned English when beginning county school. She was a lifelong member of Sons of Norway Lodge 530, and a member of the Hoffman American Legion Auxiliary. Agnes was a gentle, loving soul, gifted in her ability to show appreciation for the kindness of others and to always remain positive. She demonstrated the love of God in all her relationships. Just as we are special in God's eyes all of you were special in Agnes's eyes. She showed love to everyone who entered into her life but especially to her grandchildren and great granddaughter and namesake, Ella Pearl. She treasured her relatives, Messiah church and the Hoffman community. She made her daily devotion to God through the recitation of the Lord's Prayer, first in English and then in Norwegian. Agnes is survived by her daughter Ivalene (Allen) Cooley: grandchildren, Will and wife Melissa, Carl, Carrie, and Joel Cooley; grandchild Elena Tracy; great-granddaughter Ella Pearl Kath Cooley, and so very many loving nieces and nephews, and special relatives.
Agnes was preceded in death in 2005 by her husband of 57 years, Ivan Auslund, by her parents, brother Clifford Peterson, sister Mildred Shauer, nephew Lee Shauer, the passing of her niece Karen (Shauer)Simmons in 2013, and so many others that she cared for and adored in her 97 years. And now let there be a joyous reunion in heaven! Visitation: 4 - 8 PM Thursday at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman and one hour prior to the service at the church.
