Allan Spaulding

Allan Spaulding, 83, of Elbow Lake, died Sunday, July 11, at the Barrett Care Center.

Allan was born in Morris, Minnesota, in 1926 to Ted and Laila (Huset) Spaulding. He was baptized in Alberta, Minnesota, and confirmed at Ness Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake in 1940 and attended elementary school in District 25 Elbow Lake.

At age 18, Allan followed the wheat harvest from Texas through the Dakotas. By 1948, he was self-employed along with his brother Robert in road construction and farm drainage. After 23 years, he retired and began his new career with the City of Elbow Lake where he spent the next 20 years.

Allan was married in 1958 to Irene (Bohl) Lesto, and he became father to her children JoAnne, Betty Ann, and Gary, all of whom he thought of as his own. The couple added to their family two children of their own, Mary Ellen and Steven.

Interested in old machinery, especially tractors, Allan enjoyed fixing things and improvising ways to repair or fix anything and everything. He was a member of the United Lutheran Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include his wife Irene; children Mary Ellen (Rick) Johnson of Apple Valley and Steven Spaulding (Dawn Kruize) of Truckee, CA; step-children JoAnne Lesto (John) Odegaard of Ramsey, Gary Lesto of Fridley, and step-son-in-law Charles Schoen of Yankton, SD; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brothers Robert (Chris) Spaulding and David (Kay) Spaulding, and one sister, Norma Leraas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Betty Ann, and one brother, Clifford.

Funeral: 1:30 Thursday, July 15, United Lutheran Church, Elbow Lake

Cemetery: Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake

Visitation: 5-7 Wednesday, Erickson-Smith Funeral Home, Elbow Lake; one hour before service Thursday at Church
