Sherri Starner of Hoffman died on June 1, 2014 at her home in rural Hoffman surrounded by her family. She was 64 years old, having battled ovarian cancer for over a year. Cheryl Darlene Starner was born on December 2, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was the oldest of seven children of the Robert Majzner family. She graduated from Mounds View High School in 1968 and then attended an area vocational school. She was working as a waitress at the Blue Hawk Country Club in Cambridge, Minnesota when she met her future husband, David Starner. They were married on June 1, 1974.
They moved to Atwater in the fall of 1974, where Dave worked for Jenny O Foods as a divisional manager. It was while they were in Atwater that their three sons were born, William John, David Robert, and Andrew James. The greatest tragedy of their marriage occurred on November 13, 1975 when their oldest and only son at the time, William John, died of viral meningitis. In the spring of 1980, they moved to Dave's home farm to join with Dave's brother, Mark, and their parents in forming the farming corporation, Starner Farms Inc. She would live with her husband in their rural home for the rest of her life, enjoying the quiet life of country living. Sherri had many interests, which included gardening, playing card games, going to the casino, bowling, volunteering, and Christmas lights. Her Christmas light display, which encompassed the entire yard and beyond, was well known in the area with a plethora of cars coming by each Christmas to view the lights. The light display was her way of honoring the memory of her first son, William John. Having been a member of the ambulance service in Atwater and seeing a need for such a service in Hoffman, she, along with Dr. Sampson, started the first ambulance service in Hoffman in 1985. She also was very active in advocating for the needs of the mentally handicapped in the area, serving on various mental health boards, which included the Local Advisory Board in Grant County, where she served for 25 years. Sherri is survived by her husband of 40 years, David Starner. Her sons, David Jr. and wife, Katrina, of Goodwin, South Dakota, with their children, Gracie, Brandon, Jayda, Cole, and Caleb. Brothers, Rick Majzner and wife, Cathy, of Longview, Texas; Ronald Majzner, and wife, Becky, of Cambridge, Minnesota, Jerry Majzner, and wife, Stephanie, of Sturgis, South Dakota, and David Majzner, and wife, Karen, of Apple Valley, Minnesota.
