Deloris Derby

January 24, 1922 — September 29, 2015

Deloris Derby, 93 of Elbow Lake, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the Barrett Care Center.

Deloris Vione Olson was born on January 24, 1922 on the family farm southwest of Elbow Lake, the daughter of Iver and Hattie (Pikop) Olson. She attended country school and attended Elbow Lake High School, graduating in 1940. She married Leland Derby on December 29, 1940, and the couple was blessed with three children: Daniel, Linda and Doyle. Although the family lived in the Elbow Lake area most of their lives, Leland enlisted with the United States Merchant Marines. During his time of service, the family lived in places like New York City, Oakland California, and in the Great Lakes cities of Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio. Deloris spent much of her time working in the shipyards. After returning to Elbow Lake, Deloris worked several places, including the lunch counter at the sales barn, sold Avon products, and worked at the cafeteria for Elbow Lake and Barrett schools. The majority of her life though, was devoted to raising her children and operating Derby's Resort on Pomme de Terre Lake. Deloris enjoyed dancing, playing whist, casino runs, and embroidery. She was especially social and found great joy in any event that allowed her to visit with family and friends. She was a lifelong member of United Lutheran Church, where she was active with the Ladies Aid/Tribe, Circles, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Deloris is survived by her children, Linda (Jim) Timm of Portage, Michigan and Doyle Derby of Elbow Lake; daughter-in-law, Valorie Derby of Coon Rapids, MN; a sister, Vivian Johnson of Wendell; six grandchildren, Brian (Kim), Christopher (Jenny), Anthony (Christina), Erik (Angie), Debra (Mike), and Adam; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kyle, Alison, Kailee, Nathan, Christopher, Braelynn, Chloe and Claire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland in 1977; son, Danny in 2002; great-granddaughter, Emma in 2010; and four siblings, Vernon, Glen, Pearl and Willard.
