Douglas Shauer

Doug Shauer, 78, of Hoffman, died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. Douglas E. Shauer was born July 28, 1932, at Hoffman, the son of Reinhold and Irene Shauer. Following graduation from Hoffman High School, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Signal Corp from 1953 to 1954. On October 15, 1960, Doug was united in marriage to Jean Olson in Elbow Lake. After discharge, Doug attended St. Johns University. He returned to Hoffman and worked at Farmers State Bank. He briefly worked for Grant County. He then was employed by Bob Olsen, Inc. as manager of several White Mart Domestic Departments in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Doug later worked at the Hoffman Lumber Yard before retiring. Doug served as treasurer for the City of Hoffman for 50 years. He loved his Golden Retrievers, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities as well as being a long time Twins and Vikings fan. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Hoffman Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for several years. Doug is survived by his four sons, William (Sue Ellen) of Dover, NJ, David (Michelle) of Lowry, Alan and Michael of Hoffman; five grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew Shauer, and Jennifer, Richard and Colleen Shauer; and one sister, Catherine of Brooklyn Park. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Jean; his parents; and two sisters, Rachel and Frances. Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 am Friday, May 13, 2011, Our Lady of the Runestone Catholic Church in Kensington Clergy: Reverend Roger Thoennes Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Morris Visitation: 4-7 pm Thursday, May 12, at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman; prayer service at 5 pm; visitation will resume at the church on Friday one hour before the service. Music was provided Lynn Bruss, soloist Cassie Weisner. Casket bearers were Gary Uphoff, Gary Peterson, Joe Tait, John Dale, Dennis Satre and Don Schmidt.
