Ethel Polk, 97, of Morris, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. She was born August 31, 1914, in New York, New York, to Harry and Becky Mitzman. At an early age, she moved with her family to Almont, North Dakota, to homestead where her family operated a general mercantile. That lasted for four years and the family returned to New York. She finished her schooling and worked for Gimbels Department Store. She then joined the WAVES of the U.S. Navy in 1942. She was a Storekeeper, First Class, and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, where her duties included ordering supplies and parts for the sea planes. It was there that she met and married Willie Polk on April 4, 1945. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Ethel followed her Navy husband to many places across the United States. Willie passed away in 1997. Ethel was a member of the Eastern Star, VFW, American Legion and Disabled Veterans of America. She enjoyed fishing, spending time with family, playing bingo, crocheting, knitting and needlepoint. She was most proud that her two sons-in-law and three of her grandchildren were in the military. She is survived by her two daughters: Susan (David) Stevenson of Morris and Georgann (George) Sauder of Morris; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Bob Kessler and a niece, Sunny Reich.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Meyer Mitzman, a sister, Ida Podolsky, and a granddaughter, Becky Stevenson.
