Ila Haagenstad

Ila M. Haagenstad, 90, of Barrett, died Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Barrett Care Center.

Ila Mary Worcester was born on December 2, 1928 in Witten, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry Lewis and Mary Edna (Taylor) Worcester.  She attended school in Okreek and Winner, South Dakota through the eighth grade.  A short time later, she moved with her family to Farmington, Minnesota.

While living in Farmington, Ila’s sister Lula met and married Robert Haagenstad, which is the reason Ila met her husband, Ernest (Robert’s brother).  On June 16, 1948, Ila married Ernest Haagenstad in Farmington, Minnesota, and they were blessed with four children.

Ila held several jobs over the years, including working as a laundress, cooking and driving for head start, and most importantly, raising her family.

A “crafter” at heart, Ila enjoyed crocheting, beadwork, stitching, and plastic canvas work.  Generous and kind hearted, Ila gave away most everything she made.

After losing her home in Minneapolis, she moved to Alexandria to be close to her family.  As her health began to decline, Ila became a resident of the Barrett Care Center in November of 2012, where she has since resided.

She is survived by three children, Dale Haagenstad of Garfield, MN, Dennis Haagenstad of Florida, and Mary Haagenstad of Garfield, MN; three grandsons, Tim Haagenstad, Terry Cole, and Travis Haagenstad; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1993; a son, Neil Haagenstad in 1982; and five siblings, Olive, Lewis, Mona, Lula, and Walter.

Memorial Service: 2 PM Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake, with visitation one hour prior to services.

Interment: Lebanon Lutheran Cemetery, Amidon, North Dakota
