Jeannette Smith

June 25, 1938 — June 2, 2013

Jeannette "Jean" Marie Smith, 74, of Point Comfort on Pomme de Terre Lake, Elbow Lake, Minnesota, passed away peacefully of Congestive Heart Failure at Prairie Ridge Hospital, Elbow Lake, on Sunday, June 2, 2013. Jean was born on June 25th, 1938, in Forest Lake, Minnesota, to Charles and Harriet (Derby) Ireland. She was raised in Dumont, Minnesota, by Harriet and Rudolph "Rudy" Gulbrandson. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Herman, Minnesota, and confirmed at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, Donnelly. Jean's elementary years were at a country school, years 9 through 11 at West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, Minnesota, and she graduated from the Hoffman Public School in 1956. On May 16th, 1959, Jean married James P. Smith in Hoffman, Minnesota. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this past May.

Jean worked as a nanny, a courier for Investment Diversified Services (IDS) in Minneapolis (until 1958), Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, (until June 1960), waitress at The Copper Stein in Shorewood, Minneapolis Moline, and 27 years with Honeywell until retiring in 1993. During her working years at Honeywell she often worked overtime in order to be able to spend many weekends at their cabin on Point Comfort where they built a home in 1980 to where they later retired. Jean's volunteering included making quilts for the Dorcas Society at United Lutheran Church, reading to children at the Elbow Lake elementary school, working with the Senior Citizens, and the American Legion Post 321 Auxiliary. Jean had a passion for life, and the things she enjoyed the most included flower gardening, making pillow cases, coats, shirts, baking, cooking, and visiting with family and friends. She also enjoyed socializing with the Red Hat Society, card club, traveling, the love of fishing, and quilting for family, friends, and grandchildren who will feel the warm embrace of her love forever. Anyone who met her did not soon forget her. Jean is survived by her husband James P. Smith, daughter Lynn Smith, Phoenix, Arizona, son Larry (Shelly) Carroll, Kodiak, Alaska, daughters Susan (Alan) Burton, Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Kathy Smith, Mounds View, Minnesota; grandchildren Rachel Smith, Peter and Chader Burton, Jimmy and Sam Carroll, and great-grandchildren Christian and Bentley Williams; half-brothers and sisters Josie (Gwen) Barnard, Dale (Sharon) Gulbrandson, Pat (Mike) Ott, Kent (Sue) Gulbrandson and aunts Grace Derby, Cleo Gandrud, Arlene Gulbrandson, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
