LeRoy Lester Paulson, or Roy as his friends called him, died peacefully in his sleep October 14, 2022 at the age of 79, after a long illness. His wish was to pass comfortably in his home, which Knute Nelson Hospice of Alexandria made possible.
LeRoy was born to Royce and Leona (Rabideau) Paulson on May 22, 1943 in Bottineau, ND. His family lived in Balta, ND most of LeRoy’s life and moved to Hoffman, MN after he graduated High School. He completed his Bachelor of Science at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD and eventually earned his Master's in Education. During summer college breaks LeRoy taught lifesaving, water safety and swimming lessons at Elk Lake Beach. He spent time on the West Coast before returning home to teach 6th grade in Hoffman. Teaching was a passion and a joy to him. Mr. Paulson was a loved teacher by many and won Teacher of the Year twice. He was proud of his students and remained friends with many throughout his lifetime.
LeRoy continued to be a steward to the land and especially his beloved farm overlooking the Pomme de Terre River. He was known for his wonderful pumpkins in the fall, bountiful fruit trees that he treated with love and care and ambition to help all unwanted and abandoned animals of the world. LeRoy became an advocate for people affected by HIV. He was a valued member of RAAN and hosted many special events at his farm. He was a constant composer of letters to elected officials and advocacy groups. He also had a passion for making jewelry from precious gems. He sold many and gifted many. LeRoy enjoyed visiting with friends and never missed an opportunity for a teaching moment. He was a wonderful caretaker for his Mother Leona until her death in 2019. LeRoy was a kind generous man of many talents, and will be dearly missed.
His father and mother preceded LeRoy in death. He is survived by his brothers: Ralph (Renee) of Willits, CA, niece and nephew Lisa and Dusty and their families; Darel (Jody) of Perley, MN, nephews Jesse and Michael and their families; grand nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear special friends.
Blessed be his memory.
