Lou Swenson

December 10, 1926 — April 2, 2015

Lou Ann Swenson, 88, of Barrett, formerly of Elbow Lake, passed away Thursday, April 02, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral Services will be Monday, April 6, 2015 at United Lutheran Church, Elbow Lake with Pastor Jean Ohman officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Lou Ann was born on December 10, 1926, in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, to Martin N. and Hilma T. (Tollefson) Brekke. She was baptized and confirmed at Ness Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake and graduated from high school in 1944. On November 10, 1946, Lou Ann was united in marriage to Lowell Monroe Swenson at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Erskine, Minnesota, by the Rev. Skogboe. The couple made their home in Elbow Lake where they raised their three children, Paul, Lance, and Nadine. Lou Ann enjoyed gardening, especially her flower gardens, feeding the birds; Sunday drives, crossword puzzles (most any kind of puzzle), playing cards, games, and the Thursday afternoon Canasta could not be missed. She delighted in visiting with friends, and going out to eat. For 30 years she sold Avon and became a kind and trusted friend to many, with her contagious smile and warm heart. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her time spent with them was cherished, and for each one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she crocheted an afghan. Lou Ann was also known for calling everyone on their Birthdays and singing to them, and loved to give her family and friends special nicknames. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. Her love for animals was evident with her special buddies, Beep, Latifah, Teddy, and Pepper. Lou Ann was active in the community, a member of the United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake and active in the ULCW aid and circle. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 321 and the VFW Auxiliary Unit 612. She was a Golden Bookworm at West Central Elementary and was in the Senior Notes singing group that travelled to area nursing homes to perform.

She is survived by her children Paul "Steven" (Colleen) of Portland, Oregon, Lance (Penny) of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Nadine (Wesley "Dave" Johnson) of Barrett; grandchildren Stephanie Swenson (Howard Horn) and Scott (Jamie) Swenson, both of Colorado, Mason (Jenny) Swenson of Apple Valley, Eric (Jenni) Swenson of Jordan, Danielle (John) Swenson Karn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Deidre (Eric) Hubbard of Brandon, and Alise (Steven Rogers) Swenson of Elbow Lake; great-grandchildren Hailey, Noah and Owen Hubbard, Michael, John Jr, Levi, Lillie and Christian Karn, Bailey Shuck and Violet Swenson, Leyla and Lucas Swenson, Kayley and Emma Swenson; brother, Warren Brekke of Bloomington; and, sister-in-law, Rita Brekke of Fergus Falls; many nieces and nephews, and special cousins, Dale & Nancy Huse and Arnie Johnson. Lou Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Hilma Brekke; husband, Lowell (August 27, 2000); brother, Norald Brekke; brothers-in-law, Wallace, Thomas, and Gleo Swenson, and Elner Strom; sisters-in-law, Alvina Swenson, Eleanor "Toots" Brekke, Theola McNabb, and Deloris Strom.
