Maynard Thorstad, 83, of Hoffman, died Friday, October 23, 2015, at Bethany Community, Alexandria. Maynard Lloyd Thorstad was born on March 25, 1932 on the family farm west of Hoffman on the Pomme de Terre River, Grant County, Minnesota, the son of Burney and Cora (Munson) Thorstad. He attended country school through the eighth grade and helped on the family farm, before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1949. Maynard served as a waist-gunner on a B29 during the Korean War, and was later honorably discharged, returning to the Hoffman area. On February 27, 1954, Maynard married Carol Elaine Nelson in Morris, and they were blessed with four sons. Maynard worked many places during his career, including the Hoffman and Kensington Elevators, worked several years in road construction, and was the maintenance engineer for Hoffman Public Schools. He was also a skilled carpenter, building their log home by hand, and also built and sold storage sheds. Maynard loved anything that had to do with the outdoors, most notably hunting, fishing, and trapping. Maynard was also skilled in sewing and made many quilts for his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Hoffman American Legion Post #393 and Messiah Lutheran Church. Maynard is survived by his wife, Carol of Hoffman; four sons, Jerry (Donna) of Missoula, Montana, Dale (Julie) of Alexandria, Joel (Kathy) of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Todd (Deb) of Kindred, ND; eight grandchildren, Anne (Jeremy), Michael, Lindsey, Jacob (Alex), Scott (Karla), Teddy, Desiree (Phil), and Carol (Dale), four great-grandchildren, Hazelle, Ryleigh, Grace, and Carson; a brother, Earl of Barrett; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Visitation: 5 – 7 PM Tuesday, at Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman, and one hour prior to services at the church.
