Melvin Foss, 93, of Barrett, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at the Prairie Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake.
Melvin Leonard Foss was born September 20, 1917, in Cyrus, Minnesota, to Martin and Lena (Mithun) Foss. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended country school near Cyrus through the 8th grade. On December 6, 1941, Melvin was married to Clara Alma Brandvold at Peace Lutheran Church in Morris.
Melvin served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Hawaii. Following his discharge he worked for various farmers and later became a truck driver for Lambert Lumber. In 1969, he took a position with the University of Minnesota, Morris, as a custodian and retired in 1982.
He was a 65 year member of the American Legion, first with the Morris post, and later with Post 351 in Barrett. He was also a life member of the VFW. He and Clara were members of the Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett. Melvin loved the outdoors and the many opportunities to fish, hunt, and garden. He even ran a trap line. Melvin also enjoyed spending time with his children and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Clara of Barrett; children Melvin (Marilyn) Foss of Young America, Leonard (Sandy) Foss and Bob (Donna) Foss, both of Winsted, Cheryl (Daryl, Mel's fourth son and best friend) Tommerdahl of Elbow Lake, and Pat (Don) Sauter of Victoria; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and one infant grandson, Tony Foss.
