Mike Westrom

Mike Westrom, 48, formerly of Elbow Lake, died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in Alexandria. Mike was born in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, on August 28, 1964, to Marvin and Mary (Miles) Westrom. He grew up farming with his dad and graduated in 1982 from the Elbow Lake High School. He continued his education at the Alexandria Technical College and the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton studying agriculture. In 1985, Mike married Diane Kjar in Wyndmere, North Dakota, and the couple farmed east of Elbow Lake. Their son Andrew was born in 1986, and in 1991, daughter Amy joined the family. Mike married Jennifer Lockhart in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 5, 2005. Their son Austin was born on October 3, 2006. Mike worked in sales while living in Arizona. He returned to Minnesota in 2012 where he enjoyed his passion for fishing. For 13 years, Mike went "up north" into northwestern Ontario, Canada, for fishing and 4-wheeling with his dad and Orv Amundson. Mike was most at home on a tractor. He loved to watch the sun rise. Mike had the great ability to fix anything that needed fixing. His devoted dog Buddy was at his side on the farm. Mike loved his family. He was known as "master of the grill" and enjoyed time spent on the lake. Survivors include his children Andy (Emily) Westrom of Fergus Falls, Amy of Herman, and Austin of Glendale, Arizona; siblings Craig (Mary) Westrom of Viborg, SD and Marcy Westrom of Phoenix, AZ; step-sisters Tracy (Frank) Nellans of St. Cloud, Terry (Dean) Staley of Albuquerque, NM, and Jennifer (Jason) Harstad of Eagan; his father Marv (Connie) of Elbow Lake and his mother Mary Westrom of Phoenix; his grandmother Alice Miles of Barrett; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Selmer and Hilda Westrom, and his maternal grandfather Allen Miles.
