Norma McCumber, 90, of Barrett, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at Johnson's Home Plus Adult Care Facility. Funeral services for Norma McCumber will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at 11 AM at Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elbow Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Norma was born August 17, 1921, in Los Angeles to Maria (Ostergard) and William Henry Caylor. She grew up and graduated from high school in Los Angeles. Norma joined the United States Marine Corps on April 11, 1943, as one of the first women in history to join the Corps. She attended boot camp at Hunter College, New York, and was assigned to U.S. Marine Corps Accounting . She was honorably discharged, as a sergeant, on November 10, 1945. On September 29, 1945, Norma was united in marriage to John Colman Hawkins at San Diego, California. To this union, two children were born: Sharlea and John. The couple made their home in San Diego. Later in life Norma was united in marriage to Harry Lee McCumber. The couple made their home in San Diego. Norma and Harry worked for the Civil Service at the Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. Norma was a member of the Grace Evangelical Free Church; a member of the Study Club, and was active with the military museum in Elbow Lake. She was president of the California Historical Societies; chair for the Board of San Diego County Historical Sites; Norma and Harry started the Explorer's Club of San Diego. Both were avid stamp collectors. They enjoyed traveling throughout the world and visiting historical sites. Norma enjoyed her computer and sending birthday, anniversary, and Christmas cards to anybody and everybody. Norma is survived by her daughter, Sharlea (Jim ) Franklin of Elbow Lake; son, John Colman Hawkins II of San Diego, California; four grandchildren, Gina Maree` (Brian) Conkle, William Wayne (Shannon) White, Jamie Lynn (Derek) Schonewill, and Jodi Beth (Ryan) Rau; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler James Schonewill, Natasha Lynn Schonewill, Clay Matthew Conkle, Chad James Conkle, Hayden Gunnar White, Alexa Marie Rau, and Brooke Alyson Rau. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Grace Evangelical Free Church of Elbow Lake. Arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home of Elbow Lake.
