Ruth Ione Vipond 74, of Elbow Lake, MN, formerly of Herman, MN, was called home on Saturday, December 27, 2014, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
The oldest of three daughters, Ruth was born to Ben and Ethel Van Zomeren on January 29, 1940 in Herman, MN. Ruth attended Herman High School and graduated in 1958. On August 14, 1959, Ruth married Lester A. Vipond at the United Methodist Church in Herman. Les and Ruth had three children: Mike, Rick, and Ann. Aside from raising three children, Ruth operated a fabric store in Herman. Both Ruth and Les were active in the Herman community, volunteering and serving in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, American Legion and Neimackle Lake Park. After her children had graduated, Ruth worked with the Herman Review for a number of years. After retirement, Ruth and Les moved to Pome De Terre Lake, where they built their retirement lake home. Ruth enjoyed golfing with her friends and family, time on the lake, and their annual trips to Park City, Utah, to visit Rick, Kris, Tori and Maclane. Never missing a chance to attend her grandkids events, football, basketball games, and track meets, Ruth was at them all. Ruth also continued her sewing passion by making many beautiful quilts, purses, and placemats; she loved sharing this gift with friends and family. Ruth enjoyed traveling with Les and her family, making trips to the Philippines, Thailand; Hawaii and Mexico. Most important to Ruth, however, was the joy that came from being with her family and grandkids. Ruth was a constant source of inspiration to all of us and through her many struggles with both breast and lung cancer, she NEVER complained and maintained a positive attitude. Ruth always had a smile on her face and welcomed friends and family whenever they would stop by. She will be missed and remembered by everyone that knew her. Ruth is survived by three children, Mike (Lori Shellito) of Fargo, ND, Rick (Kris) of Park City, Utah, and Ann (Brian) Shuck of Elbow Lake; two sisters, Audrey (George) Schultz of Mound, MN and Nancy (Ken) Brockton of Northfield, MN; five grandchildren, Patrick and Jaime, Natalie (Chris), Tori, and Maclane. She is preceded in death by her parents Ben and Ethel Van Zomeren; and her husband Lester.
