Sharolyn Johnson, 74, of Barrett, MN, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at her home, under the care of her family and Lakeland Hospice. Sharolyn Jean Erickson was born on September 20, 1941 in Fergus Falls, MN, the daughter of Eugene and Evelyn (Hansen) Erickson. She was baptized in her mother's Missouri Synod home church in Jasper, MN, and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. She grew up in Barrett where she received her education, graduating from Barrett High School in 1959. After graduation, she moved to the Twin Cities, where she nannied for a doctor, eventually moving to Alexandria, where she worked for A.P. Hustad as a bookkeeper. On October 13, 1962, Sharolyn married James H. Johnson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. Sharolyn and Jim made their home on the Johnson family dairy farm and Sharolyn went to work for the Barrett School as secretary for two years, before giving birth to her two children, David and Jane. After taking time to raise her children, Sharolyn returned to work at the Barrett School as a bookkeeper, eventually transitioning in that same role to the Barrett Care Center, where she worked from 1975 until her retirement in 2006. In her spare time, she enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, feeding birds (especially orioles and gross beaks), was a 4H leader when her kids were younger, loved ice and summer fishing, and most of all, farming. Sharolyn was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett, where she was active with the Ever Blessed Quilters, WELCA, and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Barrett Legion Auxiliary and senior citizens group. Her two grandchildren were her world, and she especially cherished taking them to Medora two summers ago. Sharolyn is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim of Barrett; two children, David (Rhonda) of Fargo, ND and Jane (David) Coffey of Battle Lake; two grandchildren, James "Jimmy" Johnson and Presley Johnson; four-step-grandsons, Nicholas and Noah Coffy and Chris and Josh Stallard; one brother, Paul (Deb) Erickson of Barrett; nephews, Eric (Cassia Winkels) Erickson of Hoffman and Ryan (Angie) Erickson of Alexandria; three grand-nieces, Ava Erickson, Anna and Emily Erickson; an uncle, Orlen Hansen of Sioux Falls, SD; and numerous cousins, relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Erickson. Memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice or Peace Lutheran Cemetery of Barrett. Visitation: 3 – 5 PM Sunday, with a 5 PM Prayer Service, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett, and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial Service: 11 AM Monday, May 23, 2016, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett Clergy: Reverend Donald Reisig Interment: Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barrett Arrangements by Erickson-Smith Funeral Home of Elbow Lake.
