Sylvia Larson

September 2, 1937 — January 1, 2014

Sylvia Ann (Germundson) Larson died January 1, 2014, at the Arbor Rose Care Center in Mesa, Arizona. The daughter of Orton and Ruth (Ferguson) Germundson, Sylvia was born September 2, 1937, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She was baptized at West Elbow Lake Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake, Minnesota. Sylvia graduated from Elbow Lake High School in 1955. An extremely active and dedicated student, she served as Student Council president and was a member of the Honor Society. Her other activities included cheerleading, band, choir, and she was elected Homecoming Queen. Following high school she worked for First National Bank in Elbow Lake. In 1956 she continued her studies at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, in Business Education. On June 16, 1957, Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Lowell Larson, at West Elbow Lake, Minnesota. Sylvia and Lowell spent their first year of marriage in Roseau, Minnesota, where Sylvia worked for a public accounting firm. Lowell was employed by Roseau Public Schools as a teacher and football coach. In 1958, Sylvia and Lowell moved to Crookston where Sylvia was Office Manager for Eickoff Construction for 11 years and Lowell continued his coaching, teaching and school administration career. Sylvia contributed her time to many community and church activities. In 1969, they moved to Red Lake Falls where Lowell served as Superintendent of Schools. Once again she was a valued community asset. Sylvia helped initiate the hospital auxiliary and served as its president. They moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, where they resided until 1998. Sylvia served as an administrative assistant at Concordia College for over 25 years. Sylvia and Lowell maintained a strong relationship to the college for years to come. After retirement in 1998, they purchased a home in Sunland Village in Mesa, AZ. For the summer months, they returned to their family farm in Minnesota where Sylvia cherished the opportunity to be near her parents and keep in contact with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They sold the farm in 2011. Sylvia acquired many loyal friends from the communities in which they lived, and she made every effort to retain those relationships throughout her life. She was a leader in those communities, including Sunland Village where she was an active member of the golfing community. She served on church councils in each community and gained a reputation that if you want it done right and on time, ask Sylvia to do it. Sylvia and Lowell are members of Love of Christ Lutheran Church in Mesa and past members of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King in Moorhead, Trinity Lutheran in Crookston and Bethany Lutheran in Red Lake Falls. Sylvia is survived by her husband Lowell, son Jeff and his wife Vickie of Ham Lake, Minnesota, and daughter Julie Larson of Florence, AZ. She is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her brother Gary (Judy) and sisters Helen (Frank), Susan and Laurie (Fred). She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth (Ferguson) Germundson and father Orton Germundson.
