Violet Sorenson

December 24, 1925 — December 25, 2011

Violet (Mrs. Webster) Sorenson, 86, formerly of Elbow Lake, died Sunday, December 25, 2011, at the Edina Care Center. Funeral: 11:00 am Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, Erickson-Smith Funeral Home, Hoffman Clergy: Rev. Bob Toso Burial: Hjerdal Cemetery, Elbow Lake Visitation: one hour prior to the service Violet June (Hettick) Sorenson was born December 24, 1925, to William and Emma Hettick of Devils Lake, North Dakota. Violet grew up and attended school around the area of Aberdeen, South Dakota. In her late teens, Violet moved to Minnesota, finding her way to Elbow Lake to work at the Corner Café. On November 10, 1945, Violet was united in marriage to Webster Sorenson of Elbow Lake, Minnesota, at the Hjerdal Lutheran Church in Pomme de Terre Township. Violet and Webster farmed just north of Elbow Lake from 1945 to 1951, during which they had two children. They purchased a farm in Urness Township south of Evansville and continued farming until 1972.

Aside from being a farming wife and mother, Violet's favorite job was cooking for various small town restaurants in the area. She was a great cook and a wonderful baker. There was never an event that did not go by without Violet's pies, cookies or cakes. She won many blue ribbons for her baking at both the Grant County and Douglas County fairs for many years in a row. Violet loved bowling and participated in many leagues around the area. She volunteered with the local church ladies aid and at the Hoffman Senior center. She was an Auxiliary member of the American Legion Post #357 of Ashby, Minnesota. Violet most of all enjoyed her family. She liked spending time with her grandchildren Paulette and Wade. Together they attended the local summer fairs, she enjoyed teaching them how to gopher hunt, fish and garden. When great grandchildren were added to the family (Joseph and Samantha) she was delighted and joyous to help out in all she could.

Violet spent her remaining years at the Edina Care Center in Edina, Minnesota, where she enjoyed the people and staff, and getting letters from her best friend, Audrey Lerum.

Family members who are celebrating her life today are Dwaine (son) and Sandy Sorenson of Charlotte, North Carolina, Paulette (granddaughter) and Sam Huston with great-grandchildren Joe and Sammie Huston of Farmington, MN, Wade (grandson) and Heather (Thornberg) Sorenson of Savage, Minnesota, Ryan (step-grandson) and Carla Zieman with great-grandchild, Jacob Zieman and Shayne (step-granddaughter) Zieman, both Hutchinson, MN. Violet is now reunited by death with her Lord, Christ Jesus; her parents William and Emma Hettick; husband Webster and daughter Janice; sisters Edna Kegley of South Dakota and Ella Chappell of Wyoming and brothers Raymond Hettick of Nevada and Richard Hettick of Oregon.
